I-90, Hwy. 52 construction to re-start April 1

(ABC 6 News) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is planning to continue work on a major SE Minnesota interchange beginning in April.

Construction crews on the Interstate 90/Highway 52 interchange project worked well into the winter months last year, but work has paused. However, MnDOT plans to begin assembling and preparing for construction to start on April 1, weather permitting.

According to MnDOT, the key part of this year’s work will be the Hwy 52 detour that will last most of the construction season. Travelers from Marion south will need to follow the detour for Hwy 52.

Closed and detoured in 2025:

  • Hwy 52 south of eastbound I-90 on-ramp.
    • Detour is southbound Hwy 52 to eastbound I-90 to southbound Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 (at the Eyota exit, Exit No. 224)
    • This is expected to being April 15, weather permitting.
  • Northbound Hwy 52 on-ramp to eastbound I-90 ramp.
    • Detour is northbound Olmsted Co. Rd. 7 to eastbound I-90
  • Eastbound I-90 off-ramp Hwy 52.
    • Detour is eastbound I-90 to Exit No. 224 (Eyota exit)
      • Southbound Hwy 52 detour is south on Olmsted Co. Rd. 7
      • Northbound Hwy 52 will cross I-90, travel westbound on I-90 to Hwy 52 northbound exit, Exit No. 218
  • Eastbound I-90 bridge.
    • Traffic will travel in a single lane on the westbound I-90 bridge next to a single lane of westbound traffic while the eastbound bridge is removed and replaced

Open:

  • Westbound I-90 off-ramp to northbound Hwy 52 to Rochester
  • Southbound Hwy 52 from Rochester to westbound I-90 on-ramp
  • Southbound Hwy 52 from Rochester to eastbound I-90 on-ramp

Short-term closures:

  • A 5-day closure of southbound Hwy 52 to eastbound I-90 on-ramp when the eastbound I-90 bridge is demolished.
  • Five, one-day closures during the construction of the new eastbound I-90 bridge to allow crews to place and remove the falsework and for the bridge deck concrete pour.
  • Advanced notices and signs will be provided prior to these closures.

Construction planned in 2025:

  • Replace and lengthen I-90 eastbound bridge.
  • Begin building Hwy 52 southbound flyover bridge to connect with eastbound I-90.
  • Reconstruct Hwy 52 southbound to shift road west near I-90 bridge.
  • Reconstruct I-90 eastbound off-ramp
