Kasson-Mantorville Middle School targeted by threats
(ABC 6 News) – Administrators at Kasson-Mantorville schools sent a letter to parents early Thursday informing them of a threat against the Kasson-Mantorville Middle School.
The letter sent to parents claims the threats were investigated and reported to law enforcement immediately, who determined the threat was likely a hoax.
Law enforcement says the threats originated from a post on social media, that appeared to impact schools across the country.
Kasson Police said there would be extra police patrolling the school’s campus.
The incident is being investigated by the Minnesota Fusion Center, which was not available for comment Thursday.
It comes just a day after P.E.M. Middle Schools in Elgin, and schools in Clear Lake, Iowa, were also on the receiving end of threats posted to social media, that were both determined to be hoaxes.
The hoax left some students, like seventh grader Alice O’Conner, worried about a potential school shooting happening at her school.
O’Connor said the incident left her thinking about her safety while in the classroom, which she has tought about in school before.
“We always have to be careful be cause the classrooms aren’t as big, and there’s not a lot of hiding spots, and there’s windows on the side of the doors,” O’Connor said.
In a statement to ABC 6, the FBI Minneapolis Field Office said they take all reports of threats very seriously.
“The Minneapolis field office will work with our law enforcement partners to gather, share, and act upon threat information as it comes to our attention. The public should remain vigilant and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately,” the statement said.
If you have additional information or your child receives a message like the one reported, you should contact the Kasson Police Department.
