Mantorville man found dead at bottom of cliff in Rapid City, SD

(ABC 6 News) – A Mantorville man reported missing on Tuesday, was found dead at the bottom of a cliff near the Stratobowl, southwest of Rapid City, SD.
Alex Verburg, 24, was found deceased in a rugged area at the bottom of a cliff at the Stratobowl, an area within the limits of the Black Hills National Forest southwest of Rapid City.
According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the Rapid City Police Department received a report of an individual who had not been seen or heard from for several days.
Law enforcement investigated an area near the Stratobowl Trailhead off U.S. Highway 16 where they located Verburg’s vehicle.
The area was searched on foot and a drone was brought in for assistance, however due to low light the search was suspended Tuesday night before resuming Wednesday morning when Verburg’s body was found.
Pennington County Search and Rescue used a vertical recovery to reach the body, according to the Sheriff’s office.
There are no preliminary signs of foul play, however the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Rapid City Police Department continue to investigate the incident.
Agencies that responded included the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, Pennington County Search and Rescue, US Forest Service and the Rapid City Police Department.
