Minnesota School Bus Driver Appreciation Day
(ABC 6 News) – Wednesday, Feb. 21 is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day in Minnesota, celebrating drivers for the work they do to keep children safe.
When it comes to making sure kids get from point A to point B, it’s important to know that person behind the wheel, is someone you can trust.
“It’s not just a job, you have to have some compassion. You have to have patience, and you just have to make sure those kids are safe, 100% of the time,” said Kevin Olson, Rochester Public School bus driver.
This driver in particular has been driving school buses for the Rochester Public Schools District for 22 years.
Olson has a wife and 3 sons; after retiring from his corporate job, he chose to spend his time driving school buses.
According to Olson, there’s no greater joy than being able to support the students he sees every day.
“There are kids right now that don’t have a good family background. Some of these kids, the first thing they see is me in the mornings,” said Olson.
He goes on to say, “I have a big smile on my face; look at every one of ’em and say good morning to ’em, and before they leave the bus, have a great day [and] work hard.”
He looks back on his fondest memory over the span of his two-decade long career.
“I had a young lady that I started out in kindergarten, rode my bus all the way through eighth grade, and I got a graduation announcement for her college and went to her college graduation. Knowing that they still remembered me at that time, is awesome,” said Olson.
Although it’s important to give thanks to the men and women who dedicate their lives to giving back to others; according to Olson, that’s not why he does it.
“I don’t need anything, I have a wonderful family, just seeing the kids get home is great,” said Olson.
Olson goes on to say the best way to show your appreciation is to simply say “thank you.”
