(ABC 6 News) – February 22 is recognized as Officer Arik Matson Day in Minnesota, honoring the officer’s badge number #222.
It’s been 3 years since Waseca Police Officer Arik Matson was shot in the head and critically injured while in the line of duty.
January 6, 2020, Matson was responding to a call of a suspicious person when the incident happened. Since then, he’s undergone reconstructive surgery, speech and physical therapy and was finally able to return home in October 2020.
Matson is currently doing well with continued support from his daughter, wife, and the Waseca community.
In 2020, Matson was awarded Officer of the Year by the Minnesota Chiefs Police Officer Association.
Minnesota Lawmakers have also passed the Arik Matson bill, which strengthens the penalties for people convicted of assaulting an officer.
