Rochester man pleads guilty in April 2022 crash that killed 22-year-old woman

(ABC 6 News) – A Rochester man pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide in Olmsted County Court Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Deng Kwel, 21, is scheduled to be sentenced on the single count at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 20, 2023.
His plea deal, posted late Tuesday, specifies that he will remain out of custody until sentencing.

(ABC 6 News) – A Rochester man has been charged in connection with a crash that claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman.
20-year-old Deng Kwel has been charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide.

According to the criminal complaint, on April 11, 2022, Kwel was driving south on East Circle Drive NE when the vehicle went into the median and into oncoming traffic.
Cynthia Gomez, 22, of Rochester was driving north on East Circle Drive and collided with Kwel’s vehicle. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Cynthia’s vehicle was taken to St Marys with non-life-threatening injuries.

Court documents indicate several witnesses say Kwel was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control and rolled numerous times.
Investigators also reviewed witnesses’ dash cam video of the crash and determined Kwel’s speed was approximately 90 mph. The speed limit on East Circle Drive NE is 55 mph.
Kwel is scheduled to make his first court appearance on August 17.
