(ABC 6 News) – A Dover man died Saturday night, Nov. 16, following a train collision according to St. Charles police.

Police chief Jose Pelaez said investigators believe 88-year-old Rex Herman paused in between a railroad crossing’s stop sign and tracks, then attempted to cross when an oncoming Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern train was only about 40 feet away.

Witnesses told police the train sounded its horn and made other alarms as it approached the vehicle.

According to police, first responders located the train and vehicle about 200 yards west of the collision point–the intersection of W 11th Street and W 12th Street.

Bystanders attempted to stabilize Herman at the scene, St. Charles fire extricated him from the vehicle, and the Mayo One helicopter arrived shortly after Lewiston Ambulance took the man to a nearby hospital.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Herman’s family and to all affected by this tragic accident,” Pelaez wrote.
