Austin family receives overwhelming amount of donations after fire burned down home
(ABC 6 News) – After a devastating fire burned down a home in Austin on Thursday, the community rallied together to make sure the family has what they need in order to get through the next few days.
The community showed out for Erica Martinez and her two boys on Saturday. In fact, there were very few places to sit in the back of Taco John’s in Austin where a donation drive was held because almost every table and chair had a bag of donations on it.

Inside the bags were clothes, shoes, underwear and other living essentials. Everything was donated by members of the community who wanted to help the Martinez family get through the difficult time.
Much of the donations Martinez received wouldn’t have even made it to her if it wasn’t for her friend Dixie Denhof, who did a lot of the heavy lifting organizing the event and moving boxes out of Taco John’s.
Denhof said she saw a lot of people catch wind of the news on Facebook and expressed their condolences asking how they could help.
“There was a lot of people posting on Facebook about ‘oh this is a terrible tragedy, where do we bring donations,'” Denhof said. “I was like well let’s just do a central donation drop, let’s get something done.”
Over the course of four hours, people stopped by and dropped off donations for the Martinez family and Erica said she was tremendously grateful.
“It means so much, everybody’s been so wonderful, I don’t even know how to express my gratitude,” Martinez said.
After going through some of the donations Martinez said her boys got a lot of new stuff and wanted to extend an extra thank you to the store Games People Play for letting her boys pick out new toys and games.
For people looking to help out the Martinez family there is a GoFundMe page for people to help purchase clothes for the two boys and other items for Erica.
