Huisentruit warrant discovery goes public, info to get warrant stays closed

The latest local, regional and national news events of the day are presented by the ABC 6 News Team, along with updated sports, weather and traffic.

(ABC 6 News) – A Cerro Gordo County judge has ruled on a motion that was filed to unseal a search warrant that was executed back in 2017 regarding the disappearance of KIMT-TV News Anchor Jodi Huisentruit.

Magistrate Judge James M. Drew made several rulings following a hearing held back on March 3rd after a motion was filed to unseal the warrant by Private Investigator Steve Ridge.

Judge Drew ruled that the affidavit filed in support for the application of the search warrant will remain sealed as it was previously ordered. However, other documents in the file shall be unsealed. This includes the application, endorsement, search warrant and the return.

The judge stated in his ruling that those items “do not contain information that would compromise the investigation if made public.”

In June of 1995, Jodi Huisentruit disappeared on her way to work and has not been seen or heard from since. During that time John Vansince became a “person of interest” in the investigation.

The ruling states that sometime prior to February 14th, 2017, Vansice moved to Arizona and law enforcement learned that Vansice will be driving from Arizona to Iowa later that month.

On February 28, 2017, Mason City Police Investigator Terrance Prochaska applied for the search warrant authorizing law enforcement to place GPS tracking device on two vehicles belonging to John Vansice. The application was supported and by an affidavit and the requested warrant was granted.

The return of the search warrant was filed on March 20th, 2017, and that filed was ordered to be sealed at the state request and has remained sealed since that time.

Judge Drew also denied the motion to reopen the record.

The order to keep the information private will take effect 31 days after it is filed, unless a timely Notice of Appeal is filed, in which cases the order shall be stayed pending further court order.

The Huisentruit family released a statement on the possible unsealing of the warrant earlier this month:

“As a family, we’ve received a number of inquiries about the legal battle currently playing out in the courts with Jodi’s case. Without getting too deep into the weeds, we all agree that if the release of the information would hinder the investigation in any way, then the search warrant should remain sealed. We are not onboard with the information being released to the public, especially while the investigation is open and ongoing. We do recognize there are a number of differing opinions on this – we respect that and ask that you respect ours as well. At this time, this is our only public comment to make on this matter.”
