(ABC 6 News) — The Mayo Spartans VFW team entered Sunday on the brink of elimination. After falling to Albert Lea at home Saturday night in the division playoffs, they had to win twice on the same day to keep their season alive.
They took care of business against Stewartville earlier in the day, beating them 16-5 to set up a rematch with their rivals.
The Spartans played like a team poised from the get-go, as Liam Williams opened the game with a single. Later in the inning, the Spartans scored their first run on an RBI triple from Alec Sadowy.
Sadowy would later come around to score on an RBI single from Ethan La Brash. The Spartans get a measure of revenge, as they blow out Albert Lea 13-3 in six innings, to set up a rubber match for the division championship Monday at 5 pm.
