(ABC 6 News) – A massive wind project is one step closer to becoming a reality. On Thursday, stakeholders met with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, to decide the future of the multimillion-dollar project.

That project has received the stamp of approval, but with that, comes some mixed opinions.

Silos aren’t going to be the only thing towering above farm fields in Dodge County. Soon wind turbines will take over the sky.

Thursday the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved the project which is expected to bring in $39 million of tax revenue and $83 million to the famers.

“We did not get the preferred route in dodge county, which is right down highway 56, which is more suited for the route, but we did get some concessions on the dairy and hog farmer in the area and stray voltage,” said Dodge County Engineer, Guy Kohlenhofer.

It’s possible unintended consequences, like stray voltage that have farmers and some lawmakers like Representative Duane Quam (R-Byron) worried, could hurt livestock and impact farmland.

“I don’t think I heard a lot of ‘oh we shouldn’t be doing these;’ I think what I heard is that you need to do a better job at locating these things,” said Rep. Quam.

But the company powering the project NextEra Energy Resources is discussing these concerns with farmers again claiming further testing will be done before permits are handed out.

“That will be a part of the permits for the utility permits cause we and the county, and the township as well as Mower County still retain our authority within our right of ways within reasonable regulation,” said Kohlenhofer.

But NextEra Energy is ready to move the process along. In a statement to ABC 6 News the company said in part:

“We are pleased that the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved the dodge county wind project. Our next step is to continue working with local officials to secure the necessary permits for construction from Dodge, Steele and Mower counties.”
